Bingo! - July 17, 2010

Well, vacation time is pretty much over, and it's back to work.  I am now working with two great guys who have been at the school in a different position for a long time.  For whatever reason, one of the guys has had a number of "inquiries" not just about Christianity (aka - charismatic version only), but my type of Christianity as well.  We've had some good talks, and not surprisingly, one of the first topics of conversation was about the different "rules of Christianity" (versus the freedom that is found in native spirituality where you basically do your own thing, with perhaps the exception of how you treat the environment). 

We had a good talk about selfishness and selflessness.  I tried to point them toward the Spirit of the law, as opposed to the rules, which I affirmed to them that I often am a "rule-breaker" and that I desperately still need Jesus every day. 

Then, an interesting proposal was given to me.  If I would go to Bingo with one of the guys, they would then come to church with me...

After this invitation, I made my way over to the local church where they are currently in the middle of a building project sponsored by a number of Christians out of a large city about 3.5hrs away from here.  They've been coming every summer for a couple of summers bringing workers and materials in order to provide a building for the local church to meet in (note - my next blog will address some other thoughts I am wrestling with based on this).  I went over to the workers at their camper and sat down and started to have a good Godly visit with these gentlemen.  I even mentioned to them the proposal that this co-worker made. 

The leader of the group responded "You should bring your friend to church here first, then neither of you will have to go to Bingo"

So, what should I do?  Should I go to Bingo?  Is it a sin?  What message would I be sending the co-worker of mine?  What message would I be sending the only Christian community witness that is currently available if I went to Bingo?  What would you do?
